Every year, in the first week of March, Wheeling Park High School participates in National World Language Week. National World Language Week celebrates the diversity and culture that different languages offer. The purpose of this week is to enlighten people to different languages and cultures.

“We hope to simply broaden the horizons of students,” said Mrs. Robbins.

The language department has exciting plans and opportunities for students this week. Announcements will be read by students in either their native language or their language of study. There will be chances for students to win prizes through trivia questions. In foreign language classes, students will be introduced to countries and cultures that speak their language of study.

“Hopefully this knowledge will spark some cultural understanding in our community,” Mrs. Robbins.

There is a planned dress up theme for the week; students are encouraged to participate in Loco Lune (crazy Monday), Maillot Mardi ( jersey Tuesday), Música Miércoles (music Wednesday),  and Jumeaux Jeudi (twin Thursday).

Fluent club is leading The Pulsera Project, a nonprofit organization that is based in Nicaragua and Guatemala. The Pulsera Project expands the market for carefully crafted pulseras to high schools all around the United States. Students can buy beautiful bracelets, that are handmade by artisans in Central America, for $5. The money raised from the pulsera sale goes back to the artisans as well as providing funding for programs such as housing, health care, social enterprise, and scholarships.

“Students can get the chance to buy amazing bracelets and support artisans from impoverished nations,” said Mrs. Robbins.

Wheeling Park’s World language Honor Societies Induction Ceremony is on Thursday March 7th at 5:30.

“Students are required to be in the sixth semester of language study and carry an A to B average throughout their language study,” said Mrs. McCamic

Twenty-five students are being inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society and nine are being inducted into the National French Honor Society.

Twelve students who are studying Spanish and four that are studying French are being given the chance to take the STAMP test this year.

“It could give students the opportunity to have the seal of biliteracy on their diploma,” said Mrs. McCamic.
