The Wheeling Park Boys Track Team has a history of success that spans decades. Known for their dedication, teamwork, and competitive spirit, the team has produced exceptional athletes who have worked hard to represent Park in the best way possible. From the powerful throws of shot put and discus to the immense speed of sprints and distance races, the Patriots have made their mark on the track and field scene. Wheeling Park’s track program remains a prominent threat to the state on the track and field leaderboards, inspiring future generations to strive for greatness on and off the field.
Coach Blackwell has transitioned from coaching at Triadelphia Middle School over the last few years to his current position at Park, where he focuses on shot put and discus.
“I enjoy doing track and specifically working with shot and discus. I feel like we’re the most undervalued compared to all the other events. When you think of track, you think of sprints and long distance, not so much throwing,” said Blackwell.
One of the things he truly appreciates is his connection with the kids he coaches. “I used to coach at Triadelphia, so knowing some of the kids makes it easier for me to fit in and be a better coach,” said Blackwell. This familiarity has helped him create a supportive environment where both he and his athletes can thrive to be their best.
One of the students on the boys’ team, Lamar Williams, is preparing for another exciting season on the track, where he participates in relays, long jump, and the 100-meter dash.
“I’m looking forward to tracking this year. I was in it last year and really had fun. I think I’ve improved since then, and I’m excited to do better than before and set some new PRs for this year,” said Lamar.
Nick Franke is also gearing up for a thrilling season with the Wheeling Park Boys Track Team, focusing on the 1600-meter, 1800-meter, and 3200-meter events.
“I think this season is going to be really good. I’m super excited to improve and learn how to be the best runner I can. I like being coached by Fletcher, too; he has a really good connection with the people on the team, and he makes it pretty easy to get along with him,” said Franke.
This season, Franke is looking forward to pushing his limits and contributing to the team’s success. His positive attitude and commitment to improvement are sure to inspire his teammates as they work together toward their goals this season.
Reuben Rouse is another athlete on the Wheeling Park Boys Track Team, specializing in shot put and discus. He’s eager to make an impact this season and has a great attitude toward his training.
“I was in track last year and really liked it, so I wanted to do it my senior year too. It’s so easy to do what I like when the coaches are so supportive and easy to talk to. I have a lot of friends I can talk to in track, too, who help me be the best thrower I can be,” said Rouse.
He particularly appreciates Coach Blackwell’s fun coaching style and the familiarity they share.
“Blackwell is a fun coach, especially because I knew him before he was at Park, and it just helps me get along with him,” said Rouse.
As the season grows, the Wheeling Park Boys Track Team is driven by the hard work and determination of its athletes and coaches alike. The connection among team members enables a supportive environment, where each individual is motivated to reach their full potential. With Coach Blackwell’s guidance, coupled with the enthusiasm of athletes like Lamar, Nick, and Reuben, the team is ready to leave a lasting influence on the Wheeling Park Patriots.
