Wheeling Park wrestlers are having a great season so far in their inaugural season with girls wrestling. Boys and girls recently competed at OVACS at the Wesbanco Arena on January 15-17th. Kymber Heldreth and Terriona Gibbons were the first ever Park girls to win OVACs.
Mr. Danny Doyle is the coach for the boys and girls team.
“The girl team has been really fun this season. We started with 2 girls this year and we ended up with 10. They had a really good season,” said Doyle.
Mr.Doyle has the teams practice every day to build strength and stamina.
“Hard work is always going to be worth it no matter what,” said Mr.Doyle.
The boys team has many freshman this year, so there was a ton of future talent to cultivate.
“Earlier in the season it just showed just with our inexperience through out the season towards the end we’ve been improvements every single week,” said Doyle.
Issac Sands has been wrestling for 15 years and is a senior this year wrestling for Park.
“My mom just threw me on a mat and it started right there,” said Sands.
Sands loves wrestling because he puts all his hard work into his matches and at the end he enjoys how his hard work has paid off.
“I mentally prepare and then I just go out there and let it fly and wrestle my match,” said Sands.
Similar in dedication and experience, Terriona Gibbons has been wrestling since she was three years old. This year she took a top podium spot in the first ever season for girls wrestling.
“I like to listen to music and get in the right mindset. I love the environment around wrestling and how fun it is,” said Gibbons
