Both your boys and girls’ Wheeling Park soccer teams are heading to states! This comes after they both won their decisive regional finals games last Thursday.
The boys beat Jefferson 6-1 on October 25th in the regional semifinals, and last Thursday, they beat Musselman 3-1 in the regional finals to punch their ticket to states. Their final record heading into states is 18-3. The boys last won in 2001, and the boys will look to change the outcome of last year.
“It feels really good to be back at states, we’re really confident in the team that we have this year. I know we fell short last year, but I think we have all the tools to win it all this year,” said senior Anthony Mealy.
The girls beat Preston on October 25th, 8-0 in the regional semi-finals. Then, following the boys’ victory against Musselman, they bested University 2-0 to clinch their spot in the state tournament. Going into states, the girls’ record on the season is 17-2-2. The girls last won it all in 2020, and this will be the girls’ first appearance in the tournament since 2021, when they fell to George Washington 2-1 after extra time in the state championship match.

“I am so incredibly excited to go down states, especially because we haven’t been able to go to states in a while,” said junior Juniper Gandee.
Both teams are the second seed in the state tournament for Class AAAA. The boys will face off against number three, Hurricane, at 12:30 tomorrow. They fell to Hurricane 1-0 earlier in this season in the Patriots’ first home game, and will hope to change that result to advance to the state championship. The girls will play against number three, Oak Hill, at 7:30 tomorrow. If both teams win, they will play on Saturday.
We wish the boys and girls the best of luck as they look to win both states for the first time since 2001!
