It is no secret that Wheeling Park High School has new metal detectors for added security! Now that the detectors are at Park, administrators have undergone training on how they operate.
The detectors have several settings, depending on how much metal you want to detect.
“There’s like 10 different settings on these things and what they actually detect, from large firearms to very small metal on a person. The gentleman that sold them to us gave us a recommendation, to make sure that we hit all firearms that come through,” said Assistant Principal Jack Doyle.
Last week a select number of students had randomly been chosen to test out the detectors. They were placed at the entrance of the back lot, and students were instructed to remove their chromebooks from their bags and walk through them.
“I took my chromebook out of my bag, handed it to Mrs. Richards, and walked through. After I took my chromebook back I went about my day,” said junior Tre Frey.
While it may be a small inconvenience for students, metal detectors seem to be a positive improvement for Park. They are a great way to improve safety at WPHS and put students, teachers, administrators, and parent’s minds at ease.
“I would say that it’s just an extra layer of safety and a deterrent for anybody to bring anything they shouldn’t,” said School Resource Officer Wilson.
There is no specific timeline for the usage of the metal detectors, but they are definitely something for WPHS to look forward to.
