On March 27, students at Wheeling Park High School were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS) during a ceremony held in the Performing Arts Center.
The ceremony began with opening remarks from senior NHS officers, followed by an overview of the values that define the National Honor Society. These speakers worked to highlight the importance of involvement both academically and in the community.
Head principal, Mrs. Dailer, shared what qualities the society is looking to promote, “NHS promotes qualities – character, leadership, service and scholarship — that are valuable in everyday life, future careers and personal growth,” said Dailer
Throughout the ceremony, students recited an oath, passed the flame, and got individually congratulated with a certificate from Wheeling Park’s Mrs. Dailer.
New inductee, Hannah Heusel, a unior at Park, shared her thoughts on what it meant to be inducted.
“I was really happy to be accepted into the National Honor Society. I think it’s a great program, and I appreciate that the selection process emphasizes community involvement over academics,” Heusel said.
Membership in the National Honor Society is based on more than just GPA. Students are selected based on their involvement in the community around them as well as their character.
“Being part of NHS often has a lasting positive impact on students. Members tend to become more confident and motivated, as they are surrounded by other driven and high-achieving peers. The experience can help students discover their passions, especially through volunteering and leadership roles,” said Dailer.
The ceremony concluded with a group photo and congratulations from the crowd, marking the beginning of the involved students’ participation in the service project and leadership opportunities.
