Wheeling Park High School has many different classes that students enjoy. One of them is Radio and TV. Radio and TV at WPHS is a class where students capture different activities going on around school. The students in the class cover different topics going on around the school and film it. After each topic is chosen, they put it all together in a video and it gets shown to other students and staff at WPHS!
Mr. Nolte is one of the Radio/ TV teachers. Nolte is a alumni of the program and worked as a broadcaster at WTRF for over 30 years.
“I think the top thing that we try to really instill in our students is better communications skill when they come into our program. We do radio and television but no matter what you’re going to do in life to be successful, you need to have good communication skills,” said Mr. Nolte.
Communication skills are a life skill that can help students in any profession or path they choose.
“It doesn’t matter if they learn that much about broadcasting, but it’s about deadlines, life skills, and getting along with others because this is a simulated workplace,” said Mrs. Dillon.
Mrs. Dillon is the Radio/ TV teacher and also an alumni of the program. She worked in advertising as a copy writer and media buyer for Stone and Thomas as well as a producer for WTRF. Dillon brings that professional experience and expertise to her classroom every day.
“We try to teach our students the best way to interact with one another, and to interact with others who they’re just coming into contact with for the first time. We build communication skills and we do a lot of teamwork as well,” said Nolte.
Just like other CTE programs, students who take four courses of Radio/ TV become completers and are ready-to-work in more ways than one.
“The class and the lessons that I’ve learned I can take with me outside of high school,” said senior completer Emily Laflam.
