One of the clubs gaining traction and enthusiasm this year at Wheeling Park is the Paleontology club. This unique club dedicates its time to studying fossils, clearing up common misconceptions regarding paleontology, and learning about the effect of the specific local environment on ancient life.
The president, Colin Loughman, originally founded the club in his sophomore year with the help of Mr. Orth, one of the Park science teachers.
“I like fossils and I wanted to hang out with my friends, I wasn’t worried about gaining traction or anything originally, at least not until this year,” said Loughman.
This year, Loughman, along with the club’s Vice President, Dean Sklavounakis, decided they wanted to up the club’s visibility and attract new members.
“We [the club members] were tired of being overlooked by the school and a lot of our peers, so this year at the club fair, Dean and I made a poster and started recruiting,” said Loughman.
These students have discovered a passion in this club and have worked hard and made it their own.
“I like the Paleontology club because I get to express my love for all extinct creatures, not just dinosaurs,” said Sklavounakis, “It’s nice to teach people and see them also fall in love with it as well”.
We hope to see the Paleontology club continuing to grow and build its presence throughout the year. You can find them in Mr. Orth’s room during week three activity period!
