The girls golf team is off and running in year two of being an official sport at Wheeling Park High School. Last season, most girls had never touched a golf club before, but this year, there is clear improvement. Which is aided by their team practices and bonding, and the race to get a pic with the stuffed animal goat at the end of the round.
“The goat picture is how we celebrate the team’s low scorer,” said girls coach Mrs. Goodrich. “Our numbers are going down…and our team unity is fantastic, we play as a team and win as a team.”
They have been playing well so far this season, and have a winning record on the season. Which Mrs. Goodrich is very proud of only being the team’s second year.
“Last year we started from scratch, and didn’t know what clubs were in our bag, we didn’t really know what pars and birdies were, so now we know the basic rules of the games which really helps us progress,” said Goodrich.
On the coaching side of things, Mrs. Goodrich said it is a lot easier this year now with a year under her belt. And she is excited for what’s to come, especially next year when they’ll be playing more 18 hole matches. The whole team wants to keep getting better, and knowing more about the game.
Sophomore and member of the team Carter Kidd said a lot of the same things when it came to friends and getting better.
“My favorite part is getting to see all of my friends from other schools and I’m looking forward to progressing more and more,” said Kidd.
Carter and Mrs. Goodrich both are looking forward to the rest of the season, and Mrs. Goodrich is excited for the big events they still have left, most notably the OVAC Tournament.
“OVACs I’m really excited to see because it is the only one we play 18 holes…so I’m really excited to see how we play 18 holes at Crispin(Oglebay),” said Goodrich.
