We All Need a Little Miss Sunshine

Devyn Poole

Spring is about regrowth, having an opportunity to turn over a new leaf. Little Miss Sunshine is the perfect movie to encapsulate that spring feeling. While watching, the audience is given insight into how a person with their own variety of dysfunctions is capable to manage within a family of dysfunction. During Little Miss Sunshine, the audience experiences each member of the Hoover family going on a personal journey to find their perfect leaf.

Little Miss Sunshine follows the Hoover family, who decide to take a last-minute road trip from Albuquerque to California, for Olive, the youngest, to compete in the Little Miss Sunshine Beauty Pageant. In their run-down, bright yellow, Volkswagen Van, every member of the Hoover family changed for the better, making it easier to heal as a family. Like spring, Little Miss Sunshine is a blend of chaotic emotions with themes of individuality, familial support, and the importance of small victories. They cannot grow without each other. Throughout their journey, the dysfunctional, yet supportive family each represents the most beautiful parts of spring, showing that flowers cannot grow without rain and sunshine.
