As the sunlight hits the towering skyscrapers, the souks shine gold. In the midst of the loud hum of luxury cars, the call to prayer echoes in every corner of the city. In U.A.E’s most visited city, Dubai, culture and modern life coexist in a beautiful harmony. Dubai, one of the seven sovereign states of the Emirates, preserves the rich culture and history of U.A.E, while also balancing with the modern and luxurious lifestyle, and a future of endless possibilities for everyone.
The United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.), consists of seven distinct states, all ruled by different leaders also known as Emirs, yet unified under one federal government. While visiting Dubai, you will most likely at some point see traditional dinners in the desert at one corner of the street, and luxury cars by futuristic skyscrapers on the other. On one shelf of the grocery store you will find traditional vegetables and spices from all over the world, and on another, you will see viral candy and snacks from social media.
Momina Abrar, a resident and student in U.A.E. shares her views.
“I love how the U.A.E. beautifully mixes modern life with traditional culture. That balance between modern development and strong cultural roots makes the UAE very special to me,” said Abrar.
The beauty of this contrast lies in embracing both culture and modern life simultaneously, instead of giving up one. The leaders of U.A.E. understand that roots and progress can coexist, and that economics and industrial projects alone cannot create an unforgettable experience. This is why culture serves as the fabric of the country, weaved in every modern project, reminding of the Emirati identity.
”The U.A.E is a home to me because it is safe, peaceful, and full of opportunities,” said Abrar. Home to over 200 nationalities, U.A.E. is a beautiful blend of all types of cultures, identities, and futuristic opportunities. “Even though people come from different cultures, everyone lives together like one community.”

U.A.E is known for its cultural festivals such as the cultural entertainment festival, Global Village, which happens every year from October to around January. In this festival, different countries can represent their cultures by showcasing performances of traditional dances, and offering cultural foods and products, without ever leaving the U.A.E. This allows different cultures to freely express themselves, while also learning about others cultures respectfully and in an enjoyable way.

With only modernization, luxury cars, and futuristic skyscrapers, the city would feel hollow, and there would be no sense of identity and belonging, therefore, culture is integrated in unique ways in every part of U.A.E.

The integration of culture and modern life is very interesting to see. For example, men and women wearing traditional clothing, abayas and thobes, while walking around in the Dubai Mall, the biggest and one of the most advanced malls in Dubai. Or Emirati women wearing hijabs and cultural clothing while working in high and well-respected positions. This beautiful blend can also be seen with different states as one may offer more nature and historical sights, like Fujairah and the Old Dubai.

But then a completely different view and vibe in another city like Dubai Marina, home to any luxury one can imagine.

“I am also proud of how the U.A.E welcomes people from different countries and cultures, creating a peaceful and respectful society,” said Abrar. “The leadership’s vision and the country’s focus on education, safety, and opportunity makes me feel proud to call it my home.”
Whether you are an introvert or extrovert, an early bird, or night owl, U.A.E offers something for everyone with a chance to be who you want to be, and express yourself in one of the hundred ways possible.
