Although the Mythology class has been around for a while here at Park, Mrs. White is relatively new at teaching the class. Mrs. Yost had a semester of Mythology last school year, but this year Mrs. White is taking it on solo.
There are many different lessons and stories taught within Mythology and some are even told in modern versions in today’s world.
“I like the creation myths and the shorter stories that teach a lesson that still ring true today, like Echo and Narcissus,” said Mrs. White.
Mrs. White’s favorite characters from mythology are Demeter and Persephone because she likes the changing seasons.
“My favorite characters are probably Daedalus and Icarus because that’s also the story where the minotaur comes from and it’s very interesting to me,” said Allyson Franco, senior.
Jayden Clutter took the Mythology class her junior year and she really enjoyed it.
“My favorite thing I learned in Mythology was honestly the Hero’s Journey because it helped me a lot this year in my English class. In 12 Honors you do a lot of the Hero’s Journey so it gave me a little preview into that,” said Clutter.
Elective classes are essential because they can help you get all of your credits in order to graduate, and they are usually easier than your core classes.
“I think it’s important for students to take this (and most elective classes) because they are smaller and more laid back,” said Mrs. White. “It gives us the opportunity to be a little family and have some fun learning. I encourage feedback from the students so that I can continue to adapt my curriculum.”
Elective classes give you a break from your main core classes, but they still can be exciting and worthwhile!
“If you like literature and you like having a little extra knowledge on stories, I would recommend this [Mythology] because a lot of it is very interesting,” said Franco.
“It was really fun and more of an easy elective, but it was very entertaining and I did learn a lot,” said Clutter.
Here’s a recommendation for you to take Mythology if you have some extra room in your schedule because it is intriguing and engaging!
