Brush Strokes of Beginnings: The First Year of the National Arts Honor Society

A new opportunity has been brought to WPHS: The National Art Honors Society (NAHS) has been represented at Park, with their first ever induction ceremony on October 18th. Starting the first year of the National Art Honors Society (NAHS) is an exciting and transformative experience for both students and educators. This society, dedicated to recognizing outstanding high school students in the visual arts, provides a platform for young artists to develop their skills, engage in community service, and gain recognition for their artistic achievements.

Getting this program at Park was not the easiest. It all started with Juliette Manukin. She went to Columbus for a “Portfolio Review Day”. When she asked about Financial aid, it was explained to her that almost all art schools only consider students who are in the NAHS for scholarships and finical aid. She then went to Mr. Schultz, who immeditaly started process to bring this opportunity to his students.

From research, to emails,to paperwork and more. Mr Schultz brought this opportunity to life.

“I had to poll the art classes and see if there was an interest in forming a chapter. I had to then ask Mrs. Dailer for permission to proceed and both she and Dr. Miller were excited at the prospect of having our chapter. On my end there was some paperwork with the natioinal NAHS office and the National Art Education Association (NAEA). Juliette and I then advertized the group and took applications for 3 weeks.” said Mr Schultz.

The NAHS offers countless opportunities to Art Students. In addition to being eligible for scholarships and financial aid, students are exposed to multiple forms of art and collaborate with other students in larger projects.

“The greatest part of it all is that students are taking ownership and leadership of the NAHS. It’s such a gifted group of students,” said Mr. Schultz.

By the end of the first year, the society not only celebrates its members’ artistic achievements but also establishes itself as a vital part of the school community, paving the way for future growth and success.

Taylor Wilson is a Wheeling Park High School senior, and a first-year writer for the Park Press. When Taylor is not in school, you can find her drinking Starbucks and practicing her dance routines. She's been dancing for 15 years at the Arielette Acrobatic Academy, and 4 Years for the Wheeling Park High School Dance Team. While competing, she won numerous awards, including Miss Showbiz 2018, Large Group World Dance Champion, WPHS Winter Dance Invitational Jazz, and Pom Champion. In her free time, Taylor teaches dance classes at Arielletes, where she is passionate about educating young dancers. Taylor is a member of the Drug-Free Clubs of America, the American Cancer Youth Board, a Freshman Mentor, and a REAP counselor. Taylor is a bright, firey soul who enjoys participating in extracurriculars that demonstrate determination, perseverance, and dedication. One thing is for sure: Taylor will always get the job done with a smile on her face.
