The baseball and softball teams at Wheeling Park High School are preparing for their tryouts beginning today March 3rd.
Mr. Myers, one of the Baseball coaches, has his sights set on adding many players to the team this year. Typically each team consists of around 18-20 players on Varsity and 18-20 on JV.
Myers isn’t just looking for numbers though. He wants well-rounded players.
“I expect players to be good students first and foremost. Expectations for the team include hard work, full effort every day, and becoming a good teammate,” said Myers.
Similarly, softball expects passionate and experienced players.
“What we expect and would like to see from our young ladies is: hustle, energy, effort, a good positive attitude, and coachable, along with the ability to hit, throw, field, and run,” said Wheeling Park Assistant Softball Coach, Mike Mathieu.
Softball coach Mathieu expects as many that would like to try out, currently, they have 30 signed up to try out. They will keep a total of 25 girls for Varsity and JV.
Many players will try out for the team, but it can be intimidating to step out onto the field at any skill level.
“Tryouts [this year] feel easier, but I feel like that’s just because we are older and it was way more intimidating when we were freshmen,” said Rylie Braunlich
The baseball team hopes for a successful season this year, with much of the same talent as last year.
“I think the season is gonna be really good. Many seniors are coming back and a lot of returning starters,” said senior Noah Short.
Baseball swings into their season March 13th at Indian Creek while softball hosts their first game of the season March 19th against Oak Glen.
