Park Profiles: A Head Above the Rest

Most people know Mr. Headley as, well, Mr. Headley. Although I, and about 20 others, know him as Coach Headley, or sometimes simply just, Headley. Since becoming the  head golf coach in 2008, has coached his teams to 6 state titles (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2020, 2022), and 9 individual state champions (2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2022). He has also been a teacher here for 31 years and golf coach (assistant and head coaching combined) 29 years.

One of his favorite memories while teaching is, “seeing all of the success stories”. Where some of his former students still keep in contact with him. His favorite memory while coaching is all of the state championships won, and “seeing kids move on and play college golf”. He also enjoys the relationship with Oglebay for matches and players. Then his two favorite golf courses he’s ever taken a team to have been Brookside Country Club (Canton, OH) and all time Tartan Fields (Dublin OH).

He has always had an interest in cars, which he stated, “I started painting cars when I was 14”. In high school he knew he wanted to have a career based around cars. Then his favorite thing about the school is “getting to meet so many different types of kids.”

He also said this is “the best job I’ve ever had”.

He is also very excited for the future of Wheeling Park Golf. He mentioned a couple of things for why he’s excited, and one of them  was  all of the kids that started playing, or playing more than usual during Covid, which helped golf probably the most of any other sport. He also mentioned the fact that Oglebay is always helping young kids play or learn to play.

He also called Oglebay, “the friendliest place in the world”.

Then finally, his advice for current or future freshmen is, “make sure they get all their grades taken care of”, and he also stated that they need to make sure they have enough time to experience the rest of Park after their freshman year. He said that you need to have good grades so you don’t have to pile your schedule, and are able to take the electives that you want to.
