Wyatt Wheeler is a four year member of Wheeling Park’s robotics team. He has been an integral part of the the team’s last four state championships, along with the Iron Patriot’s four trips to Dallas for the Vex Robotics Worlds Championship. He helps carefully design the robot for his team while also driving it during matches.
“I drive the robot and help build and design it. Alot of my time is spent researching and developing,” said Wyatt Wheeler.
Wheeler is a captain on the robotics team and is the only senior on his team, 62629X, and has taken on a leadership role. Not only is this his first year being a captain, but it is also Wheeler’s first year driving the robot during matches.
“Wyatt is a great leader for our team as he plays the roles of driver, designer, and builder,” said Wyatt’s teammate, Christopher Alkhouri.
Wyatts robotics knowledge and driving skill seemed to only be out matched by his ability to communicate with and uplift those around him.
“He has a great ability to get along with anybody, which allows him to not only bring the team together but to also help us network with other teams,” said Alkhouri
Wyatt’s team has had no shortages in accolades so far this year. They (62629X) have won 41 of their 42 matches while winning every tournament they have participated in. Along with the impressive record, they are positioned first in West Virginia and 21st in the world for True Skill Rank. Despite this impressive record, Wheeler values the connection he has made, and knowledge he has gained the most.
“I have won every competition I have been to, but I think the amount of knowledge that I have gained and the people that I have met are the most rewarding accomplishments,” said Wheeler.
Robotics is not the only activity that Wheeler participates in, he also takes part in the Engineering program at Park. This year, Wheeler will achieve his fourth credit needed to become a Completer in the engineering program, and he recently got OSHA certified. He contributes his interest in engineering to the robotic team.
“My journey in robotics has allowed me to figure out what I want to do after high school. It has also helped me learn things about engineering that I could not have learned in any other activities along with enhancing my ability to make connections and talk to other people,” said Wheeler.
Outside of robotics and school Wheeler enjoys hanging out with friends, and participates in trivia at Bubba’s Burgers.
“My hobbies are robotics and exploring other engineering projects. I like to hang out with my friends and play trivia with them at Bubba’s Burgers,” said Wheeler.
Wheeler is looking forward to the rest of his robotics journey, and his goal for the season is to simply develop the team. He also looks to show his gratitude and pride for the robotics program at Park.
“My objective is to help build the team. Robotics is a really fun program and I am proud to be a part of it,” said Wheeler.
