Late arrival students have noticed new test metal detectors this semester at Wheeling Park High School when they arrive at the front door.
Some students feel like it is an invasion of privacy or trying to catch them in an act of wrong doing, but others feel like this is a trial in safety. Mr.Doyle assures the metal detectors aren’t for vapes as people think; they are for safety reasons.
¨What I want the students to understand is that the goal is not to catch something wrong, it´s all about to make sure that our students are safe,” said Mr.Doyle.
The goal for these metal detectors are school safety to prevent casualties and to make sure we are walking the halls safe.
However, they have settings they range to pick up something that is small in a high sensitivity versus a low sensitivity where you are looking for larger weapons and anywhere in between.
“We had someone to bring them in to test them since we don’t own them yet, but once we own them we will have the ability to manipulate the settings at a moment notice,” said Mr. Doyle.
They are being purchased by the central office of Ohio County Schools and are also mobile so they can be used anywhere in the county.
“If we need them at the station or at the football games, ILC, main hall or even basketball games. We can also load them up and put them in the car if any middle schools needs them but I do believe that once they are purchased, their home will be Wheeling Park High School,” said Mr. Doyle.
There seems to be one overall goal for all administrators and authorities in our building with the addition of metal detectors: safety.
¨My goal is for the metal detectors is to catch any weapons and make Wheeling Park safe,” said Officer Wilson.
Their prescence alone may make students feel safer too.
¨I think they are a good idea I want to feel safe walking in the halls,” said sophomore Lyla Litman.
The timeline of when our building will have these permanent metal detectors is uncertain.
