Black Student Union (BSU) is a new club starting in the 2024-2025 school year advised by staff member, Ms.Unique Murphy. If you are wondering where to go for a pass you’ll go to student management. BSU meets in the ILC near the windows during week two activity period.
BSU hosts an annual trip to Atlanta to tour HBCUs and wants to create representation in our school for Black students.
“As a student here at Wheeling Park High School I felt under represented as a black person in general and there are more black students then there has ever been,” said Mrs. Murphy.
Mrs. Murphy was motivated to create a space for students that currently does not exist.
“I’ve never seen any high school in Ohio County that has a Black Student Union. I just wanted to bring one here and I’m glad that the administration was very welcoming and open to the idea,” said Mrs. Murphy.
There are a lot of students interested in the club of all races, not just Black students. The club will help students be more comfortable talking about race and racial issues.
“I joined because this is like a community for people who are really of great value to some people in this school and it’s also a place to have awareness. It’s a place I want to be,“ said new student member, sophomore, Siyan Lopez
Not only will students gain a space for social justice awareness and community, but also self-discovery.
“I joined because I want to know more about me and where I come from. I just love that we have this opportunity to learn about what we do, what some people get treated on a day to day and about our culture,” said student member, senior, Rahi Sinha.
It’s great to see students and, hopefully, staff members interested in learning about Black or African Americans and their culture. Be interested and stay curious.
