It’s October — and that means fall is here. The weather is changing after a hot summer, and it’s a good time to find activities to keep busy outside of school and work. With milder temperatures in October, it can be easy to get stuck inside because of the changing temperatures.

Here are some easy day trips and activities to keep busy in October as we celebrate the harvest season.

Carving Pumpkins

Carving pumpkins is a staple of fall, particularly as we consider Halloween. A carving kit and your imagination are all that are needed to create your favorite design. Don’t forget a candle to light up your pumpkin each evening.

Visit Ebberts Farm

Ebberts Farm is a produce market located in St. Clairsville, Ohio. You can make a trip there and visit the pumpkin patch, get warm apple cider, and browse the fall decorations.

Make a visit to Oglebayfest and the Ohio County Country Fair

From Oct. 4-6, Oglebayfest makes its return for its 47th year. This outdoor festival features crafts, treats and a great chance to see friends. The Ohio Country Fair takes place the same three days and features livestock and baked goods, among other items — some of which are handled by students here at Wheeling Park High School.

Visit a haunted house

Haunted houses can be a thrilling evening activity this fall — particularly as we prepare for Halloween. Get a group of friends together for a fun night out. In our area, there are multiple options, such as Wells Township, Infernum in Terra, and Dungeon of Horrors.

Watch a scary movie

Even though this is an indoor activity, there’s nothing better than sitting down with your popcorn and your favorite scary movie. Getting your friends together for a horror movie marathon is a great way to pass time as it gets colder outside.

“I love scary movies,” said senior Trinity Kimmins. “It sets the tone for the rest of the season”.

There’s plenty to do this fall; don’t miss out sitting inside!

Sophomore Elliana McCabe is a staff writer for the Park Press. She is an aspiring writer who has competed previously in the young writers contest. This is her first experience with journalism, and she is excited to help tell the story of Wheeling Park High School and its students. Outside of writing, she is a member of the Park girls’ soccer team. McCabe is also a second-year Patriot swimmer and is a member of the strings program. In her spare time, McCabe is a soccer referee for FC Wheeling’s club and recreational teams. She provides shelter for two rescued lab rats, a rabbit, and a 2-year-old Airedale. Her claim to fame is misspelling “thorn” in her third-grade spelling bee.
