Mrs. Murphy is again hosting the “Homecoming Get Ready with Me” event on October 5th from 9 am until 2 pm at the House of the Carpenter on Wheeling Island. The event is free and open to the public.
“Around homecoming time, I offer a lot of things. I offer dresses, accessories, and whatever kids may need for homecoming. I do a big drive where I’ll reach out to the community and students who have gone to homecoming in previous years or kids who have graduated will bring stuff back. Essentially, I’m collecting homecoming dresses, ties, dress shirts, dress shoes, flats, heels, and accessories such as earrings and necklaces. I collect and weed through everything to decide what needs to be kept and what doesn’t,” said Mrs. Murphy.
She makes an experience that is special to all of the students! She helps by making it feel like the students are actually shopping through looking for dresses and accessories.
“About two or three weeks before homecoming for a week, I will take appointments where students can come to my office or go wherever I put the dresses. They can go through dresses like they’re shopping and look for anything that they might need, and they can take it for free and they don’t have to return it unless they want to. That’s really helpful because we have a lot of kids who can’t afford to get super expensive homecoming dresses so they can get it for free and that’s really nice,” said Murphy.
Mrs. Murphy partners with the House of Carpenters to find an available place for free in order to have a place for the students to get ready.
“The other thing I do for homecoming is a “Get Ready With Me” which consists of people volunteering to do hair, makeup, and nails for free, and there will be a barber that will cut hair. They’ll do anything anybody really needs to get ready for homecoming at no expense. Soon I will put a bunch of information and a sign up Google form that the kids can go on and sign up for what they need. I will meet with Each kid individually and give them an appointment to show up, and if they need transportation, it will be provided,” said Murphy.
This is a really great opportunity for the students who need a little extra help!
“The experience was really great and the volunteers were super nice. They really care about your preferences and what you want to look like for homecoming and they ask a lot of questions. I have curly hair so they took great care of that as well, and overall I really liked it,” said Ariel Palmer.
Keep checking Schoology in order to find the sign up sheet Mrs. Murphy will post. Have a great Homecoming!
