Fall sports are well underway, and golf is putt-ing in the work.
Golf this season has a new addition: the first ever Wheeling Park High School Girls Golf Team. They have played a number of matches so far this season, and have 10 girls on the team. The girls, head coach, Mrs. Goodrich said that the girls are playing pretty well, considering most of them just started a few months ago, and having fun while doing it.
“Everyone seems to be having an absolute blast, and a few girls said it’s the best thing they’ve done,” said Mrs. Goodrich.
The boys JV team is also having a pretty good season so far, and the scores are pretty consistent as well. All home JV matches are 9 holes, and played at either Wheeling Park, or Crispin. Though back in early August, 4 JV members got a great opportunity, as there was a 30 team, 18 hole tournament at Jones that the Varsity team always plays in, though on the same day, the Varsity team was playing in Columbus, and couldn’t play. One of those 4 JV team members was Brody Groome, said it was a great experience, and pretty fun to play in.
“At first it was a little overwhelming, but after you got settled in, it was pretty fun,” said Groome.
Finally for the Varsity team, they have played in 8 matches/tournaments. The Varsity team always plays 18 holes, and plays all of their home matches at the Jones course at Oglebay. Most notably, Varsity came in 3rd out of 20 teams in the Zanesville’s match.
Coming up on their schedule is OVAC’s on September 19th at Oglebay, and regionals on September 30th at Highland Springs, to hopefully punch their ticket to the State Tournament in October.
