It’s been a long time coming, most of the local area schools have a girls golf team, but the valley’s largest school doesn’t. Until now. As a girls golf team will debut in the fall. Currently there are 17 sign ups for the season, which is more than boys varsity and JV combined. Only 1 of those sign-ups has played golf for Wheeling Park before.
But the idea came up in an interesting spot. As it came about during drivers ed. and a conversation on a drive with Mr. Payne when a student asked him about a girls golf team.
And thanks to this conversation, it has many students excited for the upcoming fall season.
“I’m excited to actually have a team unit,” said junior and current golf team member Gianna Landis.
The team even has a schedule already set, which will be a mix between girls tournaments, JV tournaments, and headlined by the Girls OVAC Championship in September.
“There are so many great opportunities that come along with the game of golf,” Landis continued.
As something that many can attest to, you can make so many friends through sports, and golf is no different. As you can get along well on bus/van rides to matches, and many other things.
The boys team has always had success with almost every year being in the running for a state championship, hopeful coach Mrs. Goodrich said that her thought is the girls were always intimidated with the boys being so consistently good.
“I want every girl to come out and try it, and see what they like,” said hopeful coach Mrs. Goodrich.
