The Girls’ Basketball Team cruised to a win over rivals Morgantown 69-59 at the Palace on January 23rd. The Patriots were led by junior Lala Woods, who crossed the 1,000-point mark with 28 points. The win was sparked by the Patriot’s ability to shut down the Mohigan’s powerful offense, especially in the paint.
At halftime, the Patriots led 38-29 ahead of a pivotal third quarter.
“We were just saying that we knew Lala (Woods) had really carried us in the first half. And Jillian (Huffman) really stepped up. We also had a couple of kids that typically score like Alexis (Bordas) who didn’t do that in the first half. I just told them if we get some shots to fall and continue to play how we did on defense, we’d be in good shape,” said Coach Young, when asked about what he said to his players at the half.
In the third, the Patriots doubled their lead, leading 59-41 ahead of the fourth, In the final quarter, the Patriots went on cruise control to reach the final score of 69-59.
Woods joins her sister Shanley, a Park alum, in the 1,000-point club.
“It feels good, it’s a great accomplishment. I am glad that I have teammates who helped me get that,” said Woods on what it means to have scored 1,000 career points. “Going into the game I was like ‘We are playing Morgantown’ so I knew that I had to step it up. I was very focused through warmups and got my shot before the game, and that led to having confidence going into the game.”
The Patriots’ next home game is on January 26th, where they take on Cameron at 6 pm.
