Wheeling Park High School takes attendance seriously.
One of the main consequences and outcomes of not attending school regularly is “if you’re not coming to school, you’re not learning anything,”, “you need to come to school to get enough credits to graduate,” said Assistant Principal Mrs. Bugaj.
Mrs. Bugaj also said that the attendance average last year never got out of the 80’s, and so far this year the attendance average is 93%, with 837 students attending all of the first 18 days of school. She also said that Homecoming will help the attendance for the next few weeks as well.
Mrs. Palmer is the attendance secretary, she is the one that receives phone calls from parents and helps with the care calls. “Early dismissals are very popular on days before breaks,” said Mrs. Palmer, referring to the days when early dismissals are the most popular. She also stated how stressful the code red was last year for her, with all of the calls from parents wanting to pick up their kid(s). Mrs. Palmer said though, that they learned a lot from that, and with the new protocol/way of handling the situation put in place, those times won’t be as stressful in the form of attendance.
