Mateo Gomez is spending his junior year at Wheeling Park High School. He’s from Madrid, Spain. He wanted to transfer to a northeast zone of the United States. It was his program that brought him to Wheeling Park.
For extracurriculars, Mateo is currently on the soccer team. Out of school, he enjoys boxing and calisthenics. Mateo enjoys many elective classes as well as four core classes.
“School in America is so much easier than back home. I understand everyone, but I’m not able to express myself the way I want to. I’m just a really open person. I will talk to anyone who approaches me and I want to make friends and get some cultural experience from this year.”, says Mateo.
Mateo’s counselor, Mrs. Jones, says he seems to be doing fine with school and extracurriculars.
“If kids start out getting involved right away in school and they jump right in, that tells me they’re going to do very well,” says Mrs. Jones.
She hopes to get feedback from the exchange students to see, how the experience has been for them and what we can do to be more welcoming. Welcome to Wheeling Park High School, Mateo!
