Halloween is loved by many and is like no other time of the year. Making popcorn, grabbing some snacks, curling up on the couch and watching a horror movie is the perfect way to spend a chilly autumn night. But you may wonder, what makes you enjoy watching a scary movie and the feeling of being scared?
“What appeals to people is when they can be scared in a controlled atmosphere,” said film studies teacher, Mrs. Conley. “When they know that the fear isn’t real and they’re not in any real danger.”
A lot of times, people who are thrill seekers and chase an adrenaline rush can sometimes reach that rush when watching something like a horror movie.
“Also, there’s people who just innately seem to have a fascination with all things gruesome and morbid, that makes horror films appealing to people,” said Conley.
Harley Herring is a senior at Wheeling Park High School and she enjoys watching horror movies.
“I honestly just think they’re kind of fun to watch because you never know what’s going to happen and you never know how the outcomes are going to be,” said Herring.
Sage Swisher is a sophomore at Wheeling Park High School and she also enjoys watching horror movies.
“It gives me like a strange sort of thrill whenever I watch it, especially during Halloween,” said Swisher.
Horror movies have been around for nearly 130 years and consist of many different genres; including slasher, psychological, supernatural, comedy, etc. Overtime, these different genres have revealed themselves and have become more and more popular.
“My favorite genre of horror is slashers because they get straight to it unlike other horror movies that are just boring,” said Herring.
“My favorite genre of horror is any type of horror, I also like a little romance mix because it’s just pretty cool and different,” said Swisher.
