Rehearsals for the spring musical, Into the Woods, are in full swing, but what’s going on behind the scenes? The Park Players tech crew has been putting in a great deal of work for hours after school every day, specifically focusing on the set of the show.
Continuing the focus on the recycled set, students have been connecting water bottles to create trees, and using paper mâché and paint to make the trees look realistic. From incredibly tall trees to small branches, the tech crew has done it all, but definitely not without the help of set director Mr. Russ Schultz. This set is quite different from musical sets that Mr. Schultz has done in the past though, as normally at this point in the process, tech crew would be making large buildings.
“I keep having to tell myself that we are on track since there aren’t very many big structures in this set, but I’m very pleased with how many people are coming and turning out,” said Schultz
Although Mr. Schultz is technically in charge of set design and construction, that’s not how he likes to look at it.
“What I really enjoy is seeing when younger people actually take charge and take it in their direction. This is a major set and we are making good progress,” said Schultz.
While it’s important to Mr. Schultz that students are coming to tech, it’s also a very important extracurricular for the students themselves.
“I joined tech because of my previous love for being on stage. I really wanted to know what it was like to be backstage and do everything behind the scenes,” said freshman Morgan Janick.
For those wondering what tech is like, Janick gives a brief overview of her experience so far.
“It’s a lot of building and it can be really messy, but it’s a very loving community and everyone is very close. Everybody is always welcome to come try it and join our little group,” said Janick.
The turnout for tech crew has been phenomenal so far, but they can always use more help. If you’re ever free after school and want something to do, come to tech from 2:30-5:30 and see how you can pitch in!
