Oglebayfest is known for amazing vendors and drawing a great crowd!
The beautiful Autumn season has finally arrived and you know what that means, it’s almost time for Oglebayfest!
Oglebayfest, also known as Oktoberfest, has become one of the region’s most cherished events. This celebration has been a special tradition in Wheeling for close to 50 years. While it did start as a one-day celebration, the popularity of this festival quickly transformed it into a three-day experience.
“For many, Oglebayfest feels like the homecoming of Wheeling-friends, families, and neighbors all coming together to celebrate,” said Director of Special Events & Programming, Andy Brown.
Oglebayfest was originally created as a 50th birthday party celebration in 1978, marking a turning point in Oglebay’s history. The Wheeling community ended up responding with more than 20,000 people attending the birthday celebration, making it Oglebay’s biggest Fall day.
“From the Rathskeller at Hess Shelter that brings the spirit of Germany to life, to our classic county fair with delicious food and family fun, there’s something for everyone,” said Brown.
One of the biggest highlights is the Artisan Market, which gives talented artists and makers to showcase their incredible crafts and creations. Add on to that fireworks, food vendors, shopping, live music, a lovely parade and an atmosphere full of energy.
Nathan Tyska is a senior at Wheeling Park High School and a member of the 4-H youth development program. He introduces guests to 4-H, participates in the parade, sings songs and spreads joy around to everyone at Oglebayfest.
“My favorite part of this festival is working at the tent, but also just seeing all the exhibits and all the hard work from the clubs each year,” said Tyska.
This year, Oglebayfest is held on Friday, October 3 from 12 p.m. – 7 p.m., Saturday, October 4 from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday, October 5 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Make sure to mark your calendars and take a day (or all three) to attend this exciting Wheeling tradition!
